Lithium-Ion Battery Overview

A lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable battery that uses lithium as a key component. It is widely used in electronic devices and electric vehicles due to its high energy density, long lifespan, and low self-discharge rate.

Structure Components

* Cathode (Positive Electrode): Made from lithium metal oxides (e.g., LiCoO₂, LiMn₂O₄, NCM), it stores and releases lithium ions.

* Anode (Negative Electrode): Made from graphite or other carbon materials, it stores and releases lithium ions.

* Electrolyte: A lithium salt (e.g., LiPF₆) dissolved in an organic solvent (e.g., ethylene carbonate), it conducts lithium ions between electrodes.

* Separator: Made from polyolefin materials (e.g., polyethylene), it prevents direct contact between electrodes while allowing lithium ions to pass through.

Working Principle

* Charging: Lithium ions move from the cathode to the anode, embedding into the anode material. Electrons flow through an external circuit from cathode to anode.

* Discharging: Lithium ions move back from the anode to the cathode, releasing stored energy. Electrons flow through an external circuit from anode to cathode, powering the device.
